What to expect at your appointment

Chiropractic treatment can be very effective in helping your pain.

The Initial Consultation

At your first visit, the chiropractor will take a full and detailed medical history and carry out a thorough physical, orthopaedic, neurological and chiropractic examination. On occasions other investigations might also be necessary, such as X-rays or MRI scans, in these cases we are able to refer you directly for this. The consultation takes about 45 minutes.

The purpose of the consultation is to find out what is causing your symptoms, find out if there are any contraindications to treat you, how we need to apply the treatment methods we use to make sure the treatment is going to be effective, comfortable and safe for you.

Massage

The chiropractor will then use the remaining 15 minutes to do what is possible to ease your symptoms. Whilst we aim to treat on the first visit there are times where it might not be appropriate to treat you directly after the consultation. This will depend on the nature of your problem.

If it is appropriate to treat you the chiropractor will:

  • explain the findings from the examination.
  • explain the diagnosis and the treatment plan.

Once all your questions have been answered and you are happy to start, we commence the treatment. It is important that all your queries have been answered and that you have a good understanding of your problem. Our patients have found that this helps them achieve better long-term results.

Chiropractors use a wide range of gentle, specific manipulation techniques to unlock the stiff joints, to restore proper function and mobility, which in turn settles the pain.

Chiropractors use a variety of soft tissue, massage techniques and exercise as part of the treatment. Modalities such as Kinesiology taping and pain relief acupuncture (dry needling).

Follow-up Appointments

The number of treatments required depends on the nature of the condition, how long it has been present and also, importantly, what you want out of the treatment.

If you have been suffering from a recurring problem or have certain indications that puts you at risk from developing a recurrent problem your chiropractor will take this in to account when making the treatment plan to give you long-term benefit.
